Hello P1 Families

September is going so well for everyone in Primary 1. We appreciate all the parents who came to our orientation night last week. We hope you all find things well with the new changes and healthier choices we are making here at FMS. This week we talked about Parts of a Plant. Ms. Jessie had some exciting lessons explaining what seeds are, how important they are in our world and which seeds are edible. We got to sample pomegranate seeds! We then discussed the function of roots and which roots we can eat that are full of nutrition. We got to try radishes and carrots. Ms. Brianna introduced us to the function of a stem and vines, we ate celery. The last two introductions were the leaf and fruit, or flower. We got to sample cabbage and an apple! 🙂 This was an exciting hands on lesson for our friends. So when grocery shopping and your child asks for a root or stem to eat, they may be asking you to buy radishes or celery!

Don’t forget to log in and check out the outdoor classroom blog. Ms. Val, Ms. Marian and Ms. Kelly have captured some great photos of your children working outside.

Thank you for visiting our blog. Tomorrow (9/13) is our new parent coffee meet and on Tuesday (9/17) is the first PTO meeting!

Have a great weekend!

Beginning the 2013-2014 School Year

We are so excited to have our friends and family back from summer break to join us this school year. We would like to thank all of the families that were able to attend our Meet and Greet last Thursday, it was a pleasure meeting our new families and seeing familiar faces! This week returning students and siblings joined P1 for our first week of school. Everyone is adjusting to the new layout of the classroom, meeting new teachers in the indoor & outdoor classroom, and new friends! We began focusing on grace & courtesy, the rules of our classroom, and how to properly care for ourselves and our environment. Kindergartners met Coach Brad and went to their first P.E. class! Our snack & flower sign up sheet can be found on our P1 clipboard for you to choose a week of your convenience and participate in bringing in a healthy snack for the week and flowers for our friends to cut and arrange in vases during the week as a work. We would also like to know which of our parents are available to help out during the year with various projects and opportunities. Please fill out the form sent home so we can get an idea of who will be available to help throughout the year. You, our class parents, are what keep us together and growing as a great community and display great actions for our children to as** Please remember FMS will be closed this Monday, September 2nd for Labor Day.

Hola Amigos!

Ms. Jessie
Welcome to our classroom! I hope your summer has been filled with laughter, relaxation and fun in the sun! I am so excited to meet you and start our year together. This will be my 7th year at FMS. I am married and we have two wonderful children, Kassie(9) and Steven (3). This summer I spent many days biking and playing outside with my children. We also took a trip to Mexico, where I am from, for a week with my family. I certainly found time to recharge my batteries. Among my favorite hobbies are to read to my children, going hiking, and decorating.

Ms. Brianna
Hello everyone. I’m eagerly waiting for the first day of school in P1 and I’m sure you are too! This will be my second year here at FMS, my first in the Spanish Immersion program. I’m excited to brush up on my Espanol because I’ll be touring South America next year! This summer I spent my time visiting friends and family, and also worked during Summer Camp for Primary and Elementary. I look forward to meeting our new friends and having a great 2013-2014 school year!

This will be Ms. Julie’s second year as a support teacher in P1. She enjoyed having time off this summer and visited friends and family in Costa Rica.

Please join us next week for our Meet and Greet Family Social on Thursday, August 22nd from 5:00-7:00pm in P1. We will introduce the areas of our classroom and discuss ways our classroom will be working this year. Your children are very special to us and we look forward to fostering their inner growth both academically and emotionally. Throughout the year we encourage you to contact us with any questions, concerns and involvement. You can reach us here at school by phone, written letter or email. Once again we look forward to meeting all of you in person and welcoming you to our classroom. We are excited to be back and ready for a fantastic year. We have lots of interesting and fun lessons prepared for you!

Enjoy the rest of your summer and we will see you soon!

Sincerely,
Jessie, Brianna, Julie.

Summer is here!

As we say good by to our 2012-2013 school year, we reflect on the moments we had together.

How we learned.

 How we grew.

For some of us it was our first time in school.

For others it was the refining of our tools.

Together we know that this time was rare and the friendships that grew will follow us through.

Thanks to all of you for making this opportunity a reality for your children and for us as their teachers.

A special thanks to the parents who helped made our field day a great way to crown the end of the year with water, snow cones and plenty of smiles! Thank you Emily (Rory’s mom), Jina (Oscar’s mom), KerryFrancis(Jack’s and Lucy’s mom), Michele (Addie’s mom).  Thanks also to the PTO for organizing this fun event.

We also appreciate the wonderful snack and beautiful flowers provided by Bella and her family.

Have a safe, fun and relaxing summer,

This week we dove into the wonderful world of bees and learned about their “wriggle dance” as one honey bee “dances” the location of flower (food source) to another bee.  The sweeter the flower, the more enthusiastically the scout bee dances.

We also sampled honey that was flavored by orange blossom (the favorite), wild buckwheat, avocados and wild flowers.  The honey flavored by wild flowers was the darkest honey, looking like syrup.

Thank you for attending our Spring music performance and enjoying our class singing and speaking their way through a classic and timeless story.

Next week is the close of our 2012-2013 school year!  We encourage our students to bring in board games to share and play with each other.  Please be sure the games are clearly labeled with their names and any loose pieces are contained in a zip lock bag.  We also would rather not have noise making games, or electronic games. Thank you!
